Some History and Geography

Zurich and the area where the river Limmat leaves the lake, has been settled for 7000 years. Though, it became the city, or fort and tax collection point of Turicum, under the Romans in 15 BC. The city State became the fifth member of the Swiss Confederation in 1351. Having experienced a lively and, often, violent history during the Middle Ages, Zurich became a center of the Protestant Reformation in 1521 when Huldrych Zwingli, the Pastor of the Grossmuenster started his slow rift with the Catholic Church that ended, after a prolonged war, with a distinct Swiss Reformed Church.

After the upheavals of the French Revolution, the establishment and dissolution of the shortly lived Helvetic Republic, and the Napoleonic reforms, the Vienna Congress confirmed the recreation of Switzerland as an independent and neutral State. Zurich, for a short time (1839-40 and 1845-46) became the federal capital, but left this honor to Bern.

The large influx of people from the countryside, together with the inherent wealth of its merchant class, made Zurich soon the financial and economic center of Switzerland. The foundation of the Federal Polytechnic (ETH) in 1855, one of the worlds leading technological universities, like the construction of the first Swiss Railway in 1847 and the incorporation of surround communes into Zurich, boosted the city's ability to become a true economic leader in the area.

Today (2014) Zurich is the largest city in Switzerland. The city proper has about 380,000 inhabitants and as a metropolitan conurbation, close to 1.9 million people. About 30% of the population holds a foreign passport and languages spoken by significant minorities include Italian (4.7%) Serbo-Croat (2.3%), Spanish (2.2%), French (2.1%), English (2.0%), Portuguese and Albanian (more than 1.5% each).

Zuerich, is Switzerland's economic powerhouse and the Swiss Stock Exchange established in 1877 is today's the fourth most prominent stock exchange in the world. In addition, Zürich is the world's largest gold trading center. Ten of the country's 50 largest Swiss companies have their head offices in Zurich, among them UBS, Credit Suisse, Swiss Re and Zurich Financial Services

Zurich is also Switzerland's transportation hub and from its main railway station, fast trains connect to almost anywhere in Switzerland about every half an hour. In addition, there is a fast international to neighboring countries and and extensive suburban rail network, trams and buses that make it easy to live there without the need for a car. A superb road network and the largest Swiss airport (Zurich-Kloten) guarantee rapid international connections.

Zuerich's Educational Institutions

Close to 65,000 people study at the 20 universities, colleges and institutions of higher education in Zürich. Switzerland's most distinguished universities are located in the city. The Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH Zürich) which is controlled by the federal government and the University of Zürich funded and under direction of the canton of Zürich. Both universities are listed in the top 50 world universities rated in 2009.

ETH was founded in 1854 by the Swiss Confederation and opened its doors in 1855 as a polytechnic institute. ETH achieved its reputation particularly in the fields of chemistry, mathematics and physics and there are 21 Nobel Laureates who are associated with the institution. ETH is usually ranked the top university in continental Europe. The institution consists of two campuses, the main building in the heart of the city and the new campus on the outskirts of the city.

The University of Zürich was founded in 1833, although its beginnings date back to 1525 when the Swiss reformer Ulrich Zwingli founded a college of theology. Nowadays, with its 24,000 students and 1,900 graduations each year, the University of Zürich is the largest university in Switzerland and offers the widest range of subjects and courses at any Swiss higher education institution.

The Zurich University of Teacher Education (Paedagogische Hochschule - 1800 Students), the Zurich University of Applied Sciences (Hochschule fuer Angewandte Wissenschaften - 8000 students) and the Zürich University of the Arts (Zuercher Hochschule der Kuenste - 2000 Students). The school offers a unique range of programmes and opportunities to undergraduate, postgraduate and research degrees in design, film, art, media, music, dance, theatre and art education.

These are three top-class applied technical universities which contribute to Zürich's reputation as a knowledge and research pole by providing applied research and development. Zürich is also one of the co-location centres of the Knowledge and Innovation Community (Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation) of the European Institute of Innovation and Technolog.

There are numerous other private colleges and institutions around the city.

Canton and City of Zug - a short Portrait

The Canton of Zug is a very small area of only 240 km2, adjacent to the Canton of Zuerich (40 minutes by train from Zuerich HB). It has 115,000 inhabitants and its largest city, Zug, the capital, has 26,000 inhabitants. Despite its small size, the Canton generates more than 70,000 places of work, largely in the highly skilled financial and international commodity trade sectors.

Zug is a low income and coporate tax canton and it has become the seat of a large number of multinational enterprises.
