Internationally active engineering companies are a good source of employment. It is highly likely that the countries which have large manufacturing and engineering bases, such as those in Europe, India and China will be far less affected by the economic downturns, than those like the USA which rely on large service sector employment. Even though, the recessionary conditions of the US economy has a large impact on the manufacturing sectors of these countries. Here are some major engineering companies, almost all of them relying on their domestic market and on exports. But there will always be a place for a well educated and resourceful engineer!

Below is a very small selection of engineering companies in Europe. Apart from the large companies shown here, many engineering companies are family owned units, employing between 50 and 3000 employees. In the German speaking area (Germany, Switzerland and Austria) they are knowns as KMU's (Kleine und Mittlere Unternehmen) or "Mittelstandsbetriebe". Often they are the most innovative engineering companies one can find.

Your Resume or Curriculum Vitae

To apply to these jobs you have to have a proper Curriculum Vitae or Resume and Cover Letter. It is, besides the required education and experience, the key to landing a good engineering job, is a good effective resume. It should bring an invitation to a successful interview. The resume/CV is the item that will get your foot into the door and will determine whether you will get to the stage of the interview. A few things you should realize about applying for a job outside the USA and, maybe, Canada. During an interview, executive recruiters and human resources managers will ask you about:

	Your Place and Date of Birth
	Your current Marital Status
	The Number of Children you have
	Your Nationality
	Your Education with proper start and finishing dates for degrees and courses and the proper title (i.e. "B.S. in xxx" or "B.A. in xxx" or "Diploma in xxx")
	Languages and language fluency (do not over estimate that!)
	Sometimes and for some countries, your religion

All this information (apart from religion) should be on your Curriculum Vitae. Whether you, as the applicant, feels that these items of information contribute, or do not contribute, to your performance in the job offered, is quite immaterial. Outside the USA, these questions are well within the rights of an employer to know, before he employs you. and may, or may not, form part of the selection process. This applies whether the potential employer is a USA owned company or not. Because, if you apply in Britain, you will be employed by, say, the British subsidiary of the USA parent. Which is a British company, whoever the owner is.

Here is a selection of international engineering jobs (all with the same European employer, but from different national subsidiaries) in a large international engineering conglomerate. These are all medium to top level positions and some require knowledge of the local language.

The jobs are open to nationals from all countries. As a General Rule, they require a Bachelors or higher degree and a minimum of five years experience. Salaries and conditions are internationally competitive. Contract Period on all of these positions is two years.
